Better in Brentwood: A Curated Collection of Artisanal Creations

Artisan Peacock
When Sara Noorzad found herself without a job after decades in corporate business management, she took that as a sign that it was time to do something for herself and follow her passion. With children that were fully grown and a sister who was in a similar situation, Sara decided to jump all in to small business ownership alongside her sister, Madina. “My sister and I have always been artistic,” said Sara. “Madina is a wood worker, and I’ve been into interior design for a long time. We figured it was time for us to put our passions together and play around with some ideas of what we wanted our small business vision to look like.” The sisters had a small space inside a vintage shop in downtown Brentwood for several months which helped them to tap into their creative sides and to meet wonderful people along the way. That experience caused a lightbulb to go off. “We have a passion for working with others, and seeing their art and creativity inspired us. Madina and I knew we wanted more than just vintage and antique items; we wanted to include more local, handmade artisanal goods as well.” With the two sisters’ backgrounds in sales, marketing and management, they made the perfect team to bring something fresh and new to Brentwood.
Sara and Madina officially opened Artisan Peacock on March 1 and already have 68 artists, as well as a waiting list full of interested artists. “I opened it up to the community, telling them that I was interested in displaying artisans’ work,” said Sara. “Word of mouth spread, and now I have a waiting list. Almost every artisan has said that they needed this space in Brentwood.” With the exception of clothing, Artisan Peacock has every type of item you could be looking for, from plants and jewelry to pottery and vinyls and so much more. Artists are set up in a mindful way to create an ambiance of relaxation that transports shoppers to somewhere like Monterey or the Peninsula. Despite have such a large number of artisans on display, Artisan Peacock still provides enough space to wander and not feel crowded or overwhelmed. “You could easily spend a couple of hours looking through everything; there’s so much to see.”

Before Sara and Madina were even able to open their doors, passersby would peak through the windows to catch a glimpse of what was coming to the Streets of Brentwood. “One particular lady knocked and thanked us for opening our type of business in town, having just moved from Danville,” said Sara. “It’s been story after story of people thanking us for meeting this need. We just wanted the community to be able to purchase handmade items that are unique versus things that you can buy from a retail space or Amazon, something more special.” Artisan Peacock is the perfect place to shop for gifts while also supporting someone local who has their own story and taken their own time to create each masterpiece. “Our artisans have written bios about themselves and display them in their little corner of our store so shoppers can read about why they’re passionate about what they’re doing. It connects them.”

mong the large quantity of artists, Sara, Madina and their family members have found a way to infuse their passions into Artisan Peacock. The two sisters bring their curated, high quality vintage décor to the store, along with their love for crystals. Their mother has a nook full of indoor plants and accessories to share her love for gardening. “When my dad passed away a couple of years ago, my mom had a hard time healing. So, we created a space for her to have an outlet,” said Sara. Sara’s son has a section for his vinyls to share his passion for music. “There’s a little bit of family in here.” As for the name, Artisan Peacock, it came about after the passing of Sara and Madina’s father. “We were so broken after losing him, and every time we would talk about him or felt his presence, we would always see some sort of peacock, whether a photo or on television. So, the name Artisan Peacock is in honor of my dad. He’s with us every day, watching over us.”
Now that their doors are open, Sara and Madina are excited for what the future holds for Artisan Peacock. With over a dozen artists who are interested in teaching classes within the space, the sisters plan to host community events including meditation classes, crystal bowl healing sessions, jewelry making, and more. They would also love to offer sip and shop evenings for the community. “We just want to be a resource where people can come and have some sort of outlet,” said Sara. No matter what the future looks like, Brentwood is home for Sara, Madina and Artisan Peacock. “I live in Brentwood and the majority of my family does as well. I love it here, this community. The support is unbelievable and the support for small businesses specifically is incredible. There is so much opportunity for growth here as well. This is our home and where we wanted our business to be. Plus, the Streets of Brentwood general manager saw our dream and truly believed in us to give us this opportunity. We just want the artisans to be in a space that sets them up for success.”
